VRDB Database Generation Time
« on: February 04, 2005, 01:35:02 PM »
Avast! needs the computer to be idle before it can generate the VRDB Database. While the database was forming, I left the computer alone for 3 hours. If it doesn't take that long to create the database, please let me know so I don't have to have so much down time.

1. Do I need to disable anything running in the taskbar or background first before generating the VRDB database?

2. How long does it generally take Avast! to build this database with a...
-- 40GB Hard Drive?
-- 60GB Hard Drive?
-- 80GB Hard Drive?
-- 120GB Hard Drive?

Thanks.

1. No - However if you have lots of things running it will not remain idle for long  - But personally I don't let it generate when idle or screen saver. I run it every two weeks as a part of my regular system maintenance.

2. This is entirely dependant on the amount of data not the size of HDD. VRDB is not a backup utility, it doesn't protect data files, mainly exe, dll, system files, etc. The first time you run it will take longer and I would suggest that you click the Generate VRDB Now! option and that should finish much quicker. Subsequent Generation should also be quicker, mine typically takes about 6 minutes

1. Can I run it in Safe Mode, or do I need to be in Windows Mode?

2. Do I have to be online?

1. Never tried but no real need - just set it running when you are having a break from the PC - you can shutdown non-essential programs if you wish, I never felt it necessary.

2. No, VRDB is stand alone check of local HDD.
