"Issue" on windows 8 : Auto virus definition update
« on: November 10, 2012, 02:51:26 PM »
Hello,

I realized now that my avast didnt try to update its virus definition since yesterday at 09:09 pm ... Today  its 11:45 am...

I still have the definition 121109-0, however is now available the 121110-1 and my avast didnt try to get it...

I will be waiting for some more time to check if it will do the update later...

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks for your reply!

I was going to restart as you requested... And when I was going to click on restart: "Bump! Your virus definition has been updated!" lol

I think I was worried for no reason. Thanks for your time!

avast will check for updates at every computer start up...and download if there are any
then if the computer is left on, it will check at every 240min (default) and download if there are any

so if a new release happens one minute after your last check....it will take 239min before you computer updates....or when you restart

I understand.

Thanks.

I was worried because the last update attemp performed by avast was yesterday at 09:09 pm (more than 4 hours ago)... So I thought it could be a problem... However it performed well again...

Thanks for your help!

Hello All!

I believe I found out what is happening in windows 8....

When you shut down windows 8, in fact it enters in hibernate state. Only restart makes it really shut down the computer before it turn on again.
So, when you turn on your windows 8, it will make its start from the latest state of you machine.

In other words, lets say avast updates right now. And you turn off the computer right after the update.
Two days later you turn on the computer again. It will not auto update as soon as you turn on the machine (like happens with windows 7, vista, xp, etc). You will have to wait 4 hours with the computer turned on, to avast starts its auto update cicle (default is 4 hours) and you be able to get the latest definitions...

Thanks for your time!

You are right, but that is not a real hibernation but partial hibernation. The system is saves kernel session and system informations only. Programs and services are shutdown normally.
The method of triggering the update attempt should be changed.
