Precise definition of Resident Shield and what it does

I've looked on the net, found a good answer to a smilar question re AVG 7's resident shield but failed re Avast's resident shield. I'm thinking of switching to Avast Home Edition, so will appreciate answers to my question.

Standard Shield scans files that are copied,created,moved,downloaded and opened/executed. Thats pretty much all that i can say about it. If you need anything more specific just ask
