delay in deleting e-mail
« on: February 06, 2005, 10:52:03 PM »
Hi all,

is anyone having the same issue?  When I hit delete for a message, it seems to take too long (several seconds) for the message to delete. Is there a setting I'm missing, or is this the way of things?

What email program?
What OS?
Are you getting any messages/pop-up messages.
Is there any activity from avast, e.g. icon spinning, etc. ?

The more information you can give us the easier to make a suggestion.

sorry for the inadequate info, it's Outlook Express 6, Win 98 (I'm a holdout, I know. but it's always updated and all critical fixes are in) PII, 400 mhz, 196 mb ram, clean and fast. So, no messages or popups,  and the icon is still, no spinning on deletion. in fact, I just counted and  it  takes 13 seconds to delete a message, not the 7 I thought..
I just started reading the help file, and can you tell me where to find the FAQs?  I'm a recent transfer over from AVG since their latest upgrade.. heard good things about this little app.. and you guys are really helpful, thanks!

From what you sat, no activity from avast icon, etc. I doubt that it is that. Your system, PII 400mhz would be considered a little underpowered, that combined with win98, you could well be running out of system resources (not particullarly well handled by win98).

Try and reduce the number of programs running, unless you really need them.

The best way to examine what is running on your system is to run hijackthis and post a copy (cut and paste) of the hijackthis.log here.

Download HijackThis.zip, create a folder 'HiJackThis (or any name you choose) and unzip the contents into it. Run the hijackthis.exe and scan and save the log.

yup, you're right.. down to 30%..ooops.. doing too many things at once.  I know my system is considered underpowered, but for my needs, still okay.  Besides, I really don't like XP.  :P Win 98 is limited, but at least you can work in it.  XP assumes way too many things for my taste.. :)
thanks David

Yes, the lower system resources get, the slower things get until win98 crashes through low resources, that was what I hated most about. I was continually rebooting to avoid a crash.

It is a bit of a steep learning curve from win98 to XP, but you can control it rather than the other way round, you just need to know how ;D

I think you would be hard pressed to run XP on your current system anyway and may find that many of your programs wont run and some of the hardware may be incompatible. So you may well be best to stick with win98 until you decide to upgrade or replace you system.

what you say is true, however, in my experience, newer is not necessarily better.. especially when it comes to windows!  I played with XP for a few months when it was released and was really not all that impressed.  I even went to training on it. It seemed to be tailored to gamers and peripheral add on consumers ..  I have many friends who've gotten all the latest, pc's, scanners, cameras, etc and after a few weeks, wind up not using any of them, seems like a waste is all..  I'm sure I'll have to upgrade eventually, just not interested quite yet.. which is why I take as good care of this little engine as I can :)
