system.dat is the Registry system file.
Putting it back will likely causing windows problems.

But if you really want to put it back and take the risk....
Use the copy, xcopy or move command.

Commnad line options for copy
Command line options for move
Command line options for Xcopy

thanks eddy;

but i can't restore files in the chest.
because, they've been changed by avast ,
named such as "0000001 , 0000002 .... " and have different sizes from original files.

i can't start windows 98, so if there's an utility to restore chest which can ben used in ms dos command prompt...
thnx a lot ;)

If you do as I suggested (the repair), you will not loose your data and you will be able to do the rest from within Windows.

But don't put back system.dat !!!!!
The repair will create a new one.
After the repair visit Windows Update and install all security patches/updates.
