Mail shield causing problem in Windows Live Mail
« on: November 16, 2012, 05:29:32 PM »
My question is exactly the same as this question found elsewhere in the forum, therefore I have just copied
it:

I don't want to use the Mail Shield as it conflicts with the settings on my mail program,... but... if I permanently turn off any of these shields then I get that ever-so-annoying little yellow triangle on the taskbar icon telling me, when I hover over it,  "Your system is not fully protected".

Is there any way to get rid of this? .

In the last post in the thread, you ask the questioner which mail program he is using, because there probably is another solution than to disable the monitoring of the mail shield in Settings.
I just found out how to do this, and enjoy that Windows mail is now working as it should, and without the yellow trinangle on the taskbar.   But are there any better solutions, as I would like to be as well protected as possible.

Thanks.

Windows Mail works perfectly with Avast for me and I'm using it in Windows 7. The program is included in Win 7 but disabled. There is a way to enable both it and the Windows Calendar in Win 7 so you don't have to resort to using Live Mail which I hate. It involves downloading the .dll file used in Vista and then applying a registry fix.

Downloading Windows Essentials Live and then selecting only what you want to install is a lot easier.

Bob, that gives you Windows Live Mail, not Windows Mail. They are two separate things. Windows Live Mail is terrible in my humble opinion. Windows Mail works pretty much the same as the old Outlook Express with a few enhancements.

I am sorry!  I am not using Windows Mail, but Windows LIVE mail.  (And yes, I agree very much with you, Dch48,  Windows Mail was a MUCH better program, sad that they changed it, but now I have been used to Live for years, so I stick with it).

The problems that I experience with Windows Live Mail, is that it takes SO long time to respond. After the program has opened, and I click on a message to read it,  it takes maybe 20 sec. before the message opens.  Later it becomes quicker, but still I have to wait for up to 10 sek. everytime I will read a new message.
But after I turned of the mail shield, It functions as it should.

Another problem is that Windows Live Mail very often freezes, and I have to use ctrl-alt-del to close it and open it again.  This is VERY annoying if I was in the middle of writing a long mail!
I dont know if this problem is also fixed after I have turned of the mail shield.

I corrected the headline after I found out that the mail program in win7 is not windows mail, but windows LIVE mail, but since then I stopped getting answers, ..... should  I start over and  post a new thread - that is right from the beginning?...... :-\

I think most of the issue is that not many people here use Live Mail so don't feel qualified to voice an opinion on the problem.  It might take an Avast employee to answer your concerns.

@opllars:
- Which OS? (32/64 Bit - which SP)
- Which avast-version? (Free, Pro, Internet Security)
- Which program version (7.0.1474 is the latest)?
- Other security related software installed?

DJBone
Win10 x64, APS (always latest version)
Avast Mobile Security (always latest version)

Please read here.

-> http://www.howtogeek.com/99423/email-whats-the-difference-in-pop3-imap-and-exchange/

Just scroll down to POP/IMAP if you do not want to read through it all.

-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeltaSync

What email provider do you use? Which protocol? POP, IMAP, DeltaSync? The reason I ask is that there are different storage techniques used with each protocol. (locally, remote server)

I would consider the type of email I receive, attachments, size of emails received, quantity received, and protocol.

How full is your inbox? How many accounts do you sync? Are you subscribed to RSS feeds or newsgroups?

I use Windows Live Mail and have no problems. I have a gmail (imap) and an msn (deltasync) account with no RSS feeds and no newsgroups. I don't really know the answer, I'm just throwing out ideas.

Hello again, and thanks for all your replies!  :)

So very few of you use Live mail?  No wonder, the wonder is why microsoft invented that program.... but anyhow I dont dare to go back to old windows mail, for fear of things going wrong in the proces.

DJ Bone:
I use Win 7, 64 bit SP1
Avast Pro
Latest program version
Spywareblaster installed, use windows firewall.

Charyb:
I use a pop3 protocol.
My inbox contains 4000 emails (few of them have big attachments)
I only have one account (well two, but in reality they are the same, they just have diffent names)
I was not aware I was subscribed to RRS (had 54 unread messages there), I have now deleted all and unsubscribed from all.
No newsgroups as far as I can tell, I dont know where to look, but since I have never used them, I suppose there aren´t any.

So as it is now, it function as it should -  BUT whitout the mail shield activated, which  I understand is not a good idea security wise.  If I turn it on,  it takes 10-20 sec. to open each mail.

I actually use Mailwasher to pre-scan my email's from my ISP for Spam.
After I see what I have in my inboxes, I then tick off the ones I want deleted at the ISP and allow Mailwasher to download the rest by
opening Windows Live Mail.
(Mailwasher is free if you only have one email account)
