I thought I told you at the beginning of this Avast/BT Yahoo problem in the other forum to ditch ZA and use the free Outpost firewall which in my experience is a much more sophisticated and able firewall than ZA.

If you'd have listened to me then this thread would never have started here.

Tell her lads how good the Outpost firewall is.

Peter

I happen to be one of those who like ZA better than Outpost. but, that's my opinion.
But, when ZA asks for permission to allow a program access to the net, it does have to be granted in order for the program to work. :)

You are one of the lucky ones bob, as i said ZA does the oddest of things at times, i for one have never understood how it can sometimes completely blocked access to the internet when it has been uninstalled  :o ::)

outpost is indeed good, but it comes down to personal opinion, i personally am going to swap to it soon since my Sygate firewall doesn't go to well with avasts new webshield.

I hated the ZA interface and its lack of flexibility or configurability, however, the uncomplicated user interface suits many peoples needs. I tried several firewalls, sygate just wouldn't install on my system (failed to reboot after install), but the one I settled on was the free version of Outpost.

The free version of outpost is now very long in the tooth, but still functional. There was a terrific deal over the Christmas break upgrade to the 2.5 Pro version, one off payment and free lifetime updates.

Is it the best? that is a very subjective question and your experience level and requirements have to be the deciding factor.

David,

Is Outpost free unsafe then?, how much 'safer' would i be with outpost pro (taking into consideration that i have a hardware fw as well)

Edit: Also is this 'deal' still going on?

Bob,

I'm using the latest version of ZA.  Well, Avast is working but only for one email address ... I only set it for 2 to trial it after all the problems in the past. I've had to disable it for one of the addresses I set it for. No problem with Zone Alarm once I'd manually added Avast to it.

Right Peter and all

I have used Outpost in the past and because a head injury has left me with a very small short term memory lose, I had to keep going back to the help to try and remember what to do. It got too complicated and, for me, I couldn't find the setting for leaving it to run and not intrude on me when doing things on the computer. I found it and the Norton FW far too intrusive, I just couldn't set it to run in the background whereas ZA and SPF I can set to run in the background. I could even run Black Ice Defender in the background but it was no good to me with only 6 months of free updates ... the same with Panda.

I will be buying NOD32 next month if I can sort my finances out after the ruination of my garden by council workers since Feb 1st

Thanks for all your patience in helping me. We now no it's not ZA stopping it from working but why for one address and not others, I've no idea.

Anne

1. Outpost 1.0 free is still OK but you have to realise there is no further development going on and the pro version is 2.5. The main thing is it still doing the job and I would say yes, but it depends on your personal system usage and settings. You can check out the Shields Up tests at grc.com, there were occasions when my PC wasn't totally stealthed because of B9 (email monitor/protection checking the pop/smtp/imap ports), but that wasn't truly a serious issue.

The hardware firewall will give you good protection from inbound attack (so the same stealth issue that I had (on dial-up, so no hardware firewall), shouldn't effect you and you should have good outbound protection with outpost free. So in combination I think you have adequate protection.

2. The offer only lasted from 10 Dec to 10 Jan I think and I did post about it. Who is to say if they will do it again, you will have to monitor the website and you could subscribe to the newsletter.

Hi All,

Me again, no matter what I do, it will only work with 1 email account ... not the others ... why? I set it up as told and did everything right so why still play up? I added it manually to Zone Alarm so I know it's not that.

Been trying to solve it since 8pm UK time and still no further.
