Updating problems

I've been having update problems with Avast Home Edition. Once I got the red box that avast could not connect to server (or I think that's what it said). Then I've tried manually updating but it just hangs trying to download vbs. I cancel out after a long wait and then sometimes I'll get a lil pop up about the update which never happened.
I have reinstalled avast and I'm still encountering the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not my firewall as I have avast set to be allowed.
Any ideas? Is it your server?
Thanks.

What firewall do you have?
Have you tried with the firewall disabled/removed?
Make sure you have set "no proxy" in the settings.
I just checked and it is not Alwil's server, so it is your system.

Thanks for the tip. I discovered that my firewall was blocking the updator or what ever the exe is that calls to your server. Funny thing is I don't remeber blocking avast, ever. So it's a mystery but at least it's working now.
Thanks.
