I think Avast is the best free AV program but I have to wonder why so many people still get viruses while using Avast?
That is something that has never ceased to amaze me.
The problem is that people are all different, have all sorts of browsing habits and have all sorts of system setups.
There are many people that are more prone to malware infection due to their browsing habits and not having their systems fully up to date. Old software is more prone to infection as vulnerabilities get exploited, where updates would have closed the vulnerability.
Many just get caught out by social engineering, where they are fooled by a plausible scenario and click a link/button when in fact they are actually going to be downloading and installing malware.
Many people are running using administrator accounts, should they then get hit that malware essentially also has administrator privileges, so any impact can have a greater impact and spread.
