Windows 8 x64: programs that are no longer working
« on: December 02, 2012, 07:06:38 PM »
Some weeks after using Windows 8 x64 I've discovered some of my freeware does not work anymore with Windows 8.
Is it only me?

1. Revo Uninstaller is not finishing the scanning after the regular uninstall was performed.
2. Unlocker is not shown anymore on the Windows Explorer context menu.
3. DVD Region Killer cannot install the driver to allow we to see DVDs in other regions.
4. AMP WinOff (shutdown scheduler) is not detecting the networks anymore to shutdown Windows.
5. PST (Outlook) backup is not working anymore on Office 2010 regardless the "tricks" we can find in internet to allow backup of the Outlook file.

Well, it's not only Avira which is not working on Windows 8  :-X

I don't use any of those programs Tech but I can say that all bar one program ( the new version 9 of DVDFab ) work flawlessly for me, one thing I've noticed also is that the mbamservice uses twice as much memory on win8 compared to 7 but it still functions correctly.

Do all the programs your having issues with state that they are compatible with win8 ?

No, of course not, they don't say anything about compatibility...

Revo says it's compatible on there download page ??? - Unlocker hasn't had an update since April 2011 - region killer last updated 2007 :o - AMP WinOff last updated august 2011, Iv'e got no idea about Outlook as I don't use it but I would say most of the problems are due to programs that haven't had any recent updates to make them compatible other than Revo which you should report to them to see if it needs fixing.

Yes, most of the times. Seems drivers won't be solved by Compatibility Mode... Windows 8 changed a lot of things... It's not just a cosmetic update from Windows 7.

Tech you've could at least wait until mid next year to upgrade W8, because you have to understand there are a lot of software companies haven't update their drivers and software programs to W8. What is the point of getting W8 right now then suddenly you've been kicked in the bare rear with drivers and software problems that is not ready yet for W8, I would strongly stick to W7 until mid next year maybe I'm sorry I don't bloody care what other people have for those who were lucky running W8.

Last week a friend mind has jump in from W7 to W8 and he having a lot of problem with software programs and drivers because most of them are not available just yet, so he went back to W7 until it's fully ready when the time is right for other companies to update their drivers and software programs for W8 as they are still far behind.

Nothing wrong with Windows 8. I've been using it for almost a year. :)

I don't know the full use's of Unlocker but it seems to give you authority to delet locked files - if that is all your really using it for then this registry script here works well http://www.askvg.com/collection-of-registry-tweaks-for-windows-7/ work just as good on win8 and it'll add the take ownership option to your right click menu which will allow you to delet anything you like :) it adds several other benefits also which are explained in the link, I've been using this script for years now and it works very well.
