Re-installing Avast V7

Hi
I've had to uninstall Avast (with ASWCLEAR) after the automatic program update failed completely - the updated version was sending my computer in a loop.
I've tried to re-install a freshly downloaded version (free version from download.com) but fail - I get the following log (attached).
Can anyone help?  I've already wasted 3 hours :-(

My first guess (according to the error code) would be a problem with the hard disk... I suggest to run a disk check (including the surface scan).
