"Malicious URL Block" Popups
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:39:54 AM »
To Whom It May Concern;

For the past several days, I have been recieving several popup messages from my avast anti-virus saying that it has blocked several malicious websites, whether I'm logged into the internet or not.  The messages seem to pertain to the file path C:/windows/system32/svchost.exe.  I have run an anti-virus and spyware scans, but havthey have not detected any harmful viruses or malware.  I have run several additional scans per you instructions at the thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0, and a ComboTXT scan from another thread I found in your forums.  The logs are attached below:

There may be some delay due to differing time zones and availability of the volunteer malware removal specialists.

The same thing happened to me yesterday.
I received a virus notification of a similar sort.

Avast alerted me to delete the threat. I deleted the threat.
Internet continued to work fine, but when i restarted it I am unable to connect to the internet.
Noting works, wifi connection , lan connection, i even tried connecting thru bluetooth modem - but it also failed.

I checked various forums, and tried to turn on windows fire wall and internet connection services, but it also failed.
I installed malwarebytes , master boot record scanner from avast and also windows malicious virus removal tool -
but did not find anything suspicious. I found 3 threats and i removed them - but still unable to re-start firewall and internet services and network.

Please advise

@ waqaspai

Hi  were you using a custom TCPIP file as opposed to the MS one  ?

Download the Avast fix zip file to a USB from the link below
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/avastfix.zip
Copy to all affected XP systems

Extract the files to their own folder on the desktop
Right click Avast and select Avast shields Control
Select Disable permanently
Open the Avastfix folder and double click TCPIP.bat
The computer will reboot
When the computer restarts then immediately update Avast

Once rebooted could you let me know of any remaining problems

@ Archanubis  the next post will be for you

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

Ran both OTL and TDSSKiller.  Results are hopefully optimistic.

Re-run TDSSKiller with the same parameters
When the following appears select delete:

\Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System )

Then let me know what problems remain

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe
