Problems with 7.0.1474
« on: December 15, 2012, 05:28:08 PM »
Just like the last update, 7.0.1468, Avast is screwing up my computer again.

I have two different computers, a netbook that runs XP, and a bigger laptop that runs Windows 7.  Previously, both were running, updated up to 7.0.1466, and had no problems.  When 7.0.1468 came out, I updated both computers.  The one running 7 had no issues.  The one on XP, however, froze on start-up, loading the desktop background and a few icons, and nothing more.  Nothing would run, and I eventually had to go into Safe Mode to get it to start, uninstall Avast, and went online and redownloaded .1466.  To this day, the XP computer is still running on .1466, because I've been wary of updating ever since.

Two days ago, I finally gave in to the persistent popup from Avast to update to .1474 on the computer running 7; and the EXACT SAME THING happened to that computer.  It loaded background, the icons showed up, one or two task tray icons loaded, and it locked up.  Restart, safe mode, uninstall, it works fine.

What the HECK are you guys doing that this keeps happening, and what should I do about protecting my system from viruses with something that's NOT going to crash my computer ANYWAY?

1. avast! GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Enable: "Load avast! services only after other system services"
2. Click OK.
3. Reboot.

I will certainly give this a try; and report back if it works!

Thank you very much!  For the time being, at least, it seems to be working just fine.  I'll give it a day or two, since I updated on the 13th and it didn't do it until just now, the morning of the 15th, but for the moment, it looks like it may be helping.
