how Avast! blocks a virus?

I wonder how Avast blocks a virus while surfing the net (Real time scanning b4 opening the page)...the blue icon spins but does it make a sound...or the virus has to enter into a PC 1st? Just curious...!

If you want to see what happens when a virus is detected, I suggest you use the
eicar test file
