P2P Problem?
« on: September 12, 2003, 01:43:49 AM »
Hello everyone.  Just registered for the forums and just received the automatic download of the new avast! program update.  Smooth reboot.

P2P protection -- I downloaded a couple of files from Kazaalite and WinMx.  No indication of any P2P protection.
Blue ball does not turn after download is complete and the name of the file does not show up in the 'last file scanned' area of the P2P protection page.

Is there a probem or is this working normally?

Dave,
I am not sure if you have a problem or not.
Try opening one of the files to see if the ball rotates.
The blue A ball only rotates when Avast is monitoring and scanning a file.

Try opening some other file or program and watch the ball.  Does it rotate?

The I ball is for the VRDB which may or may not rotate depending on when you have it set to update.
The default is 3 weeks.

Keep me posted.

DAve, what operating system are you using? What versions of the P2P apps?

I have a problem with Kazaa Lite too, but not the same one.

While Kazaa is running, about every 30 seconds or so an avast window comes up (full screen) saying its testing a file.  Then it disappears.  It's a pain in the u know what tho with it flashing on the screen all the time and interrupting whatever I'm doing.  ie - three interruptions just while I'm typing this short message.

Ok - make that 4.  How do I set it to test without the window flashing up every 30 seconds???

What window? Can you make a screenshot of it? Or at least quote the exact message? Where is it on the screen - is it like in the center, or at the bottom etc., what colors does it have etc...

Thanks
Vlk

Hi,

avast! logs problems in P2P/IM providers into special log file (located in
Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\log\AvCommEx.txt). If exists this file, can you send me it to sedina@asw.cz?

Thanks!

pavels

Hello again.  Sorry for delay in answering -- big time difference between us.

For Vlk -- I'm running Windows XP, SP1 with all critical updates installed.  My computer has a 1.8GHz processor with 512Mb ram.

For Pavels -- the special log file you mention does not exist in my case.

I'm using the latest Kazaalite, version 2.4.2 which came out a few days ago, and WinMx 3.31 which has been out for a long time.

The downloads go to their proper folders.  When the folder opens for the first time, the avast! blue ball rotates.
It does not rotate when opened a second time.  If I manually scan each file individually, the blue ball rotates.
Again, there's no listing of any downloaded file on the new avast! P2P protection page.

Hope this helps you.

Can you please try to double-click the avast tray icon, select "Details...>>" (if not done before) and restart the P2P shield (i.e. stop it and start it again)?

Then watch if the downloads are picked up by avast (when complete).

Thanks,
Vlk

Vlk -- did as you requested.  Stopped and then started the P2P protection and then downloaded some files for testing.  No action from avast!

I can manually scan each file without any problem, but, it doesn't seem to pick-up on the files once they're downloaded.  There are no error messages of any type and the P2P protection says it's working.

This question may see lil' strange but can you please tell me what are the process names of the P2P apps you're using? I mean the process names that apeear in the Processes tab in Task Manager.

Thanks,
Vlk

Vlk -- in task manager, under processes, Kazaa Lite is listed as KazaaLite.kpp and WinMx is listed as WinMx.exe.

I do not run both programs at the same time.

avast! team...

I will try an experiment when I get home from work in
8-9 hours.

Since my avast! program update was an automatic download, I will try uninstalling avast! and all associated registry keys.  I will then reinstall like I'm getting it for the first time and see if that makes any difference with the P2P protection.  I will report back in this thread at that time.

Vlk, I hope this works, I've attached a screenshot of the window I get all the time when kazaa is running.

As for where it appears on the screen - like I said it is the FULL screen.

Where have you attached it? To your post? It's not there, maybe because there is a 150K limit on attached files...?

Ok, it must have been too big then.

Well....up the top it says "avast! Quick Scanner", green avast logo, then it says:

Number of tested files:      1

Tested files:                       C:\ProgramFiles\KaZaA Lite\MySharedFolder\download etc

Then it has a cancel button.
