Problem downloading updates

My Win 98 connects to DSL through a router/modem and I am tying to use Avast home.  When  I start the machine Avast tries to update I get a message: "An error has occurred while attempting to update"  I then click for more info. and get the message: "Cannot connect to download5.avast.com (unknown80)"  The registration key appears to be correct.  Any suggestions?

First of all, can you update Avast manually?

No, I get a series of messages "Error Cannot connect to server"

Have you got any firewalls on your system that could be blocking avast?

There must have been a problem with the firewall, I updated zone alarm and made sure the Avast update was allowed and the update went fine.

i encountered this problem

it says:

An error has occurred while attempting to update!

i clicked it and it says:

currently, I'm also using the ZoneAlarm firewall.
i tried to disable it while it updates but still no help.
i did tried to update manually and it works but still this error kept surfacing.

ok...i've solve the problem myself...after reading thru all the helps here...its my proxy problem...
