Scanning internet downloads

Pardon my ignorance, but when I download a file from the internet, does Avast automatically scan the download (I'm using the 4.6 beta), or must the downloaded file be manually scanned after the download is complete?

It's actually scanned twice. First by Web Shield and later by Standard Shield.
