AvastSvc.exe is eating up my CPU
« on: January 05, 2013, 11:24:10 AM »
Hello,
AvastSvc.exe is using up over 80% of CPU usage, making my laptop run at a snails pace. I tried to update both Avast engine and virus definition and the program but nothing changed. Please help.
Engine and virus definition version 130104-1.
Program version 7.0.1474.
Platform: Windows XP Pro service pack 3.
Thanks a lot.

Well it doesn't do this of it own volition, it is an on access scanner, so there is some activity causing it to scan.

What are you doing in the background, streaming music, downloading something, P2P, etc. etc. ?

How long have you had avast installed and what was your previous AV ?

Whilst this high CPU is shown (presumably in the task manager) is the avast tray icon rotating ?

¡Hola!
I have the same problem as tirashad, the only difference is that my PC is desktop. The ram memory is 512 MB.
There is no program running in the background.
I am using Avast free several years ago. I don´t remember the previous AV.
The Avast icon is not rotating whilst the cpu usage of AvastSvc.exe gets the 80% (not continuosly) in the Task Manager.
The Avast File Shield has a low and sporadic activity.
The warning from Avast saying that the virus database has been updated takes about 5 minutes since the appearance of the Windows desktop.

Saludos

Your system is possibly a little under powered 512MB even on XP would benefit from an extra 512MB, this should show improved system performance overall.

It is possibly best for you to delay the update check (see below) until your system is fully up and running, but you should also be very selective on what you allow to run on boot. Many applications when installed set themselves to run on boot when it isn't essential that they do, media players are just one example, they are only needed when you actually open a media file.

Delay Auto Update - In avast7 you need to edit (using notepad) avast5.ini the [InetWD] section of the, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini (XP file location)

- Broadband connections, add this line:
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 and
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 if not present (or edit AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1)
Quote
[InetWD]
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

¡Hola DavidR!

I have delayed the update check and it is relaxing to get the system operative several minutes before.
It is an old PC but I probably shall add it more ram memory.
For me this item is solved.

Thank you very much.

Saludos.

This is fileshield process.
Disable Java Quick Start in Java control panel applet and it will stop.

Cheers :)
