Vlk..  yes.  Actually igor sent that thread to me months ago when I first came to the forum looking for a fix for this problem.  It didnt work but I had forgotten about it and have been just putting up with it.   Ill try it now with the new version and see if it helps.  Will get back to you on it.

Now to fix an Avast unrelated problem   (getting a Too Many Parameters message on bootup)   lol

Ashserv.exe uses 9.8 mb on my pc (running win98se).
that's almost the same as the previous version 
anyone  has a less Ashserv memory usage?

Also is that pure memory usage or Virtual memory usage being shown?

Looks great, so far -- I didn't play with the beta, so I'm just seeing it hands-on since this morning.

My one concern was that the new Web shield would slow down browsing considerably, but no noticeable difference yet.

Even with on-access set to normal I have frequent blue-screen crashes that I never had with 4.5.
I have gone back to 4.5 for now

I found the problem:

On Win9x, you have to tell your browser to use HTTP proxy 127.0.0.1 on port 12080.

There isn't any need to set on-access on high if the browser is configured this way as it will detect ALL four test files on the eicar site.....excellent!!  However, what isn't excellent is the lack of warning that older browsers have to be manually configured!!
