Windows 7 Firewall
« on: January 14, 2013, 11:03:04 AM »
Hi, i am new to Avast and have a couple of questions.  The program seems to have installed properly and does not give error messages,  but it seems to make windows firewall ignore the rules i have created for my programs.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the behavior still happens.

I also see that utorrent is unchecked in the P2P shield settings, as i sometimes use it should i check it?

Windows 7 64
Avast free

not recommend leaving two firewall turned on as there may be conflicts between them.
if you want you can select the option to have the avast scan utorrent in P2P shield becomes many downloads is advised because many viruses are transmitted by the peer to peer networks.

jefferson santiag I don't know where you came up with the two firewalls conclusion as the OP is talking about Windows firewall and has avast free.

Sorry I probably didn't describe my issue  properly.

I have several programs that call home and nag me to upgrade and buy the newer versions when they are launched.
I have blocked outbound communication for them in the windows 7 firewall,  but they seem to have internet access with Avast free installed.

If you go to the avast webshield settings and tick the box for Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only your outbound rules will now work.

Thank you very much craigb that did it.

Couple follow up questions, does this reduce protection? And if so, is it significant?

Your welcome :)

It might reduce protection slightly but I think it is negligible and there is not much choice if your wanting to use the windows firewall.

There are a few third party firewalls that actually work better and allow avast to function correctly like Outpost, Online armor and Privatefirewall.

I am assuming that Avast Internet Security would also solve this?

Yes

It seems to be only Windows firewall and Comodo that have this problem as there unable to distinguish traffic rules through avasts webshield proxy ( something like that anyway :) ) I cant find the thread that had all this in detail, someone else maybe able to find it or chip in with some more advice for you.

"Note" that avast does not disable the windows firewall as it works with it but you can disable the windows one if you wish to save some resources.
