My computer won't shut down properly - help!
« on: February 13, 2005, 06:37:20 PM »
Hi!  My computer won't shut down properly.    So I am forced to shut it down improperly.   What should I do about this?
I just reinstalled Avast Professional after running a restore disk on my computer to fix problems.     I ran Avast today, but it said it was unable to scan a file.   What do I do about it?   THe file it stated is this:   d:\CPQS\YQR.Exe.    I think I already have some buildup of problems on my computer, as it took a while to download numbers of protection items that I've heard are recommended, and meanwhile, viruses or problems could have occurred.   Plus my daughter downloaded a number of her games that are on CD.   And I know such games sometimes have viruses.
I'll be thankful for any help I can get on this!
                                   Debby

What OS?
What is the reason that Avast gives for not being able to scan that file?

If you want to make sure your system is clean:
Click on the link in my signature and follow the directions in the malware removal section

Debbie

Try this you've nothing to lose. ;D

Open Desktop> Right click in an empty space> Click New> Shortcut> In the command line copy and paste this

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

Click next> Call it whatever you want to and click finish.

You now have a shutdown shortcut so double clicking on it should shut your PC down.

Debbie let me know how you get on and I'll tell you where to put it.  ;D ::)

Debby,

If by chance you are using Windows 98 first edition, go here for a possible answer (requires adding a line to avast's config file)

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11347.0

if it's not that, you could have spyware or a virus or a damaged registry...
if so, you should follow Eddy's advise as provided on his webpage.
