BSOD after scan
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:14:58 PM »
So I was trying to fix a coworkers computer that has been without antivirus for a year. I installed avast V 6 and ran the quick scan. No viruses, which was a lie. I then ran a boot scan and there were 2700 problems found. I selected repair, but only half complied, so I then quarantined the rest. It was working ok, so I unplugged it and carried it to another room open. It was unplugged and unobserved for less than a minute, and when I looked back at it, it was continuously rebooting. "Last good configuration" yielded no results, but safe mode worked. I restored the quarantined files, but it did not help. I was able to turn off the automatic restart and see the Blue Screen Of Death, which said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. There were no problems with hardware before scanning, and some of the viruses found were parite and runner, if that helps.

Because I'm in rural Kenya and internet is very slow and spotty at best. I have uninstalled Avast, but the computer will still only start in safe mode. Would installing V7 help, or is the damage already done? I've never experienced hitting 'repair' on an antivirus causing major damage to the system before, and was hoping for some guidance. I'm trying to avoid a new installation of the opperating system. The comp is running xp, by the way. Thanks for any help you can give.
