If you don't need Java, I'd uninstall it altogether.

I though I needed it. What actually uses it? I know the Open Office installs it when you download it and run the installer.

Hi honda2010,

Disable it whenever you have no absolute need to use it or when you cannot circumvent the use of it (online banking using java etc). If you wanna use it " do that on a on-demand" basis, pre-check where you are going. Whenever you decide to have it on update genuine updates. Also check that update is genuine, as there are fake updaters from sites that will infest your machine with "genuine updated  ;D " malware....

Ok this update is the one that pops up on the Desktop after boot up. I wasn't surfing the web when it poped up.
I can disable it I'm sure my pc will tell me if Im trying to do something that needs Jave. I know if I do use it that it needs to be up to date.

My advice.. If you don't desperately need it then bin it

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article and this article.
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)
