This new version (603) is going from bad to worse
« on: February 20, 2005, 03:15:05 PM »
First, the new NNTP monitoring "feature" is causing NewsLeecher's display to hiccup and now ashmaisv.exe is crashing.

How do I back out to the previous version gracefully?  Will a complete uninstall of the new version / reinstall of the old version be clean?  I want to wait until this thing is cooked some more.

Why not try to solve the problem?
That make more sense to do.

What happens if you disable nntp scanning in the Internet mail provider?

When / how exactly is ashMaiSv crashing?
Are there any corresponding unpXXXXXX files in your <avast4>\Data\Log folder?

It indeed makes sense but I don't have the time to troubleshoot.

I've disabled NNTP and the NewsLeecher download display works properly again and hopefully the mail service will not crash.  I have two NNTP clients running simultaneously, connected to two different servers.  If this remains stable then well and good and I'll keep it installed but leave that service turned off.  I think the feature is pointless anyway in the face of effective real-time hueristic file system scanning.  If things don't remnain stable, I'll roll back to the previous version.  The only reason I went to this release is to correct the "crash on shutdown bug".  I do have Event Log reports and the crash report from the log directory saved.

It just crashed for no aparrent (at least it just ain't aparrent to me :) ) reason and yes, I saved the file as well as the Event Log message.  Where do you want it sent?

Just for information:

I've just tried Newsleecher 2 (beta) and had no problems at all.
(with nntp enabled)

I'm running 1.0 Final.  What happens is that the bots display does not indicate continuously the status of the download threads.  That was the first issue.  Turing of the NNTP scanning fixed that.  Before I did that though, the service I indicated above crashed.  With that service turned off, things appear stable for the moment.

Can you try version 2 of NewsLeecher and check if that solves the problem?

Sorry - I prefer not do betas except under extreme duress.  I take my Usenet downloading VERY seriously. :)

Got the file. Will take a look at it shortly. Thanks for your help.

BTW it seems that you have a slow internet connection. Can you confirm that?

Thanks.

Actually my connection is 5Mbit - anything but slow.  My primary news server is throttled at source to two threads, each 32Kbit and my seconday news server can hit 450Kbit during off-peak hours.

OK, the crash report indeed helped identifying a bug in the NNTP handler.
Could you please try an updated version? It should fix the problem.

Please follow these steps:

1. Stop the Internet Mail provider
2. download http://cat.asw.cz/misc/ashmaisv.zip and extract its contents to the avast folder (overwrite ashMaiSv.exe - it shouldn't be locked thanks to 1.)
3.start the Internet Mail provider

Please let me know if there're any  problems...

Thanks :)
