JS:ScriptPE-inf[Trj] and PUP.Crossfire.SA
« on: January 24, 2013, 04:53:47 PM »
I had this notification popping up every two minutes while using Opera:

TROJAN HORSE BLOCKED
C:\Users\AY\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\cache\dchache4.url
Infection: JS:ScriptPE-inf[Trj]
Action: Moved to chest
Process: C:\ProgramFiles\Opera\opera.exe

I did a scan with Malwarebytes and it detected PUP.Crossfire.SA

I'm not sure what to do next. I have attached all the logs. Thanks!

I did everything you said. I have not received any alerts in the last 30 minutes. Here is the most recent OTL log.

Also, after I deleted the files AdwCleaner found but before I ran the fix I did a quickscan with Malwarebytes and it found something called Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit, which was quarantined and deleted before I ran the fix. My most recent scan of Malwarebytes shows nothing. I'm attaching the logs from that too.

The computer is behaving normally now. I haven't had any alerts. This is the most recent log.

The only new thing I've noticed is that I get this notification from Avast every time I boot or reboot my PC:
"The last attempt to update your virus definitions was unsuccessful. To ensure you are protected from the latest threats, try again to update your virus definitions now." So I always update it manually. I'm not sure if that is relevant.

Let me know if you are happy tomorrow and I will remove my tools

Set Avast to load after system files, as it appears to be trying to grab an update before it is fully loaded

Open avast select settings > troubleshooting > load Avast after system services

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article and this article.
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected Keep safe

I set Avast to load after system files but I'm still having the same message about updating virus definitions. I noticed that it happens at other times, not just when I boot my PC. Do you know if there is anything else I should do?

Other than that I haven't been having any problems.
