I'm a new kid to the virus catching biz. When Avast has caught one and I've put it in the "Chest", what happens now? Does it stay there in perpetuity or can I get rid of it somehow?

It gives time to investigate - whilst in the chest the virus (you don't say which) can't be activated. If after a few days there are no adverse effects, you can delete it from the chest. If need be you can restore it or move it to another folder.
