What do I need to do to have the Web Shield run correctly (if anything at all).

Nothing. Just make sure it's installed and running. On Win2000/Xp you don't have to configure anything.

You should see ashWebSv.exe in the task manager, process tab.

Click on the avast icon and se if the Web Shield is started, click the Start button if it isn't.

You might have to go into services.msc and start the ashwebsv.exe if it doesn't start automatically. You can also check msconfig.exe and see if the file is listed in the services pane. I've seen the ash*sv.exe files in ON Access as started, but in services.msc it is not running, so unless you restart the computer after making changes in On Access, it may not start the service you are wanting.

The webshield on my XP craches the mozilla firefox browser, if it does not crash it freezes up and willnot connect to the net,  I just have it disabled.  might be nice if it actually worked

It does work, I use it happily with firefox, no problems at all.

it might be nice if you browsed the forums or used the search function, I'm sure you could have found some information to help.

It might be nice if you expanded on why it crashes or freezes, e.g. what errors or warnings were displayed or what it was exactly you were doing when they occur and if they can be duplicated? We can't possibly help if you don't give us the information.

What firewall are you using.

1.01 firefox,  freedom personal firewall,  no mesages just crashes or freezes up will not allow any http activity except 3 out of 100 bookmarks and typed in url's wont work either.. and I have went into the firewall and marked the webshield to act as server and made sure the exe has been approved.  Once the download happened I was unable to get onto any site save 3 on the net. reset the firewall to allow and still no dice only works when webshiled has been terminated.  I ahve downloaded and tried all the fixes on this site.  I always search before posting

Please excuse my doubting your having searched.

Have you tried the workaround fix for Zone Alarm even though you have 'freedom personal firewall' http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=11486.0, you never know it might work in a similar way to ZA.

Hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong thread here.

Earlier today I  d/l'ed Build: Mar2005 (4.6.603) on my box (Win 98 SE); thus far, it has been working like a champ.  What exactly is Web Shield (ashwebsv.exe) designed to do?  What is/are the added feature(s) that it brings to the table?  I searched for all references in this forum to ashwebsv.exe and while many problems were discussed, if one were to ask me what this added capability is for, I really don't know.  Is it suppose to prevent hijacking?  Will it eventually perform trojan horse type processing?  Please point me in the right direction to either truly help me understand it or ... enlighten me with your understanding of what it is and does.

Thanks in advance,

Dirigo

LOL here!  Nice suggestion ... but ... while I have avast! little blue balls "a" and "i" running in the systray, the "a" right mouse click doesn't give me any "Help" (file option) to select, soooooo ... after selecting the available Starting avast! Antivirus option, I waited awhile for the program to do its thing ... then once the skin's Simple User Interface is finally ready to go ... I click on the ? mark and select Help ... and nothing happens ... well, no biggie as that is somewhat typical for much Beta software, huh?

Now, David R.,  since you're an avast! evangelist and took the time to write a post, I've got to believe you know what ashwebsv.exe is for ... so could you please enlighten me or ... leave it to others that might be so inclined.  Standard Operating Procedure, for most people, is to check the help files, but sometimes the help files aren't there or haven't been updated to reflect the changes ... especially in Beta release software.  I'm not saying that is the case, but ... I've experienced that enough times in the past ... in my case, the help files were not accessible.  Thanks for your assistance.
