avast! Cleanup Tool is a small program that will clean the remaining registry entries and files still left behind by avast! Antivirus uninstaller.

What's new in v1.2:

I guess they have their reasons (especially since closed beta did support Win8 afaik).

Vlk has cleared (excuse the pun) this up the URL/file name is case sensitive (don't know why) the link needs to be all lowercase, that is, http://files.avast.com/test5beta/aswclear.exe and this link works.

Makes me wonder why installers themself don't do a proper cleanup in the first place. Pretty much EVERY antivirus that i've tried left bunch of crap behind after uninstallation. And nothing was ever like quarantine files. Always some useless garbage that has no meaning to stay there.
And some even leave active low level system drivers installed which then make absolute wreck once you install 1 or two security apps later. because every leaves some crap behind, its just accumulating and making more problems. I just don't get it.

I'll have to test their cleaner if it does anything this time, it did exactly nothing for v7 once it was uninstalled before the cleanup...

Who knows for sure, since(Avast) no one mentioned anything about Windows 8 being "excluded" from the  Public Beta Testing!
Dam disappointing after all this waiting. :(

<snip>

That really is the heart of the matter, a regular uninstall should remove all remnants and the uninstall utility should only be there for use when the regular uninstall fails. Yet avast isn't alone in both of these leaving remnants. It is all right making the excuse that Legacy keys are the realm of the OS, but if the program being installed results in these keys being created the program should be able to get rid of them.

I'll have to test their cleaner if it does anything this time, it did exactly nothing for v7 once it was uninstalled before the cleanup...

Thanks, hopefully they will do a better job.

I see no reason to leave the legacy crap there even if Microsoft says you should. I'm cleaning it for like ages and it never ever caused any problems. In fact, not doing so caused more issues really. "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" section which is nicely hidden from the Device Manager holds all the answers. If you have been testing a lot of security programs, you'll be surprised how much junk is left in there and some even remain active after security app uninstallation. Comodo 6 for example always leaves 1 driver active and 3 inactive. avast! as far as i remember during the testing doesn't leave any active but it leavs a lot of inactive there. AVG also leaves active stuff. Thats why i hate all of it so much.

Try to run device manager (devmgmt.msc) from commandline with variable devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices set to 1.  You will see even more junk there. Just don't touch any network and sound interfaces in this mode, there are special ones that are needed even if they show as inactive (and it's hard to discern them from real inactive ones), removing them will brick the system.

Please note that the cleanup tool is only compatible with Windows Vista or newer versions of Windows, and not Windows XP.
It won't work with XP?
