since updating to 4.6 grabit news reader not working

since avast upgraded to 4.6 around 13:00 uk time tody. my grabit news reader hangs and will not update groups or search. avast displays the icon i get in the task bar when it is scanning my email. i close down grabit as leaving it does nothing and finally avast pops a message up saying - internet connection timeout elapsed, continue waiting.

i have a netgear dg834 router for extra info. no firewall on my machine and am using winxp home sp2

i now have grabit working again but have had to disable the nntp scanning. this is not ideal.

any help appreciated.

thanks for the response.

I tried that before posting (should have mentioned that in my post) and still got the same result.   i have disabled the nntp scanning to get it working at the moment.

do you need me to supply you with any other info.

Hmm, that's very strange, the patch definitely helped other users...

You need to extract both files from the ZIP archive to the avast folder (C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4 by default)

i have done this again just now and grabit still hangs when searching or trying to update the groups. i can't do anything unless i disable the nntp scan in internet mail control service.

any other suggestions??

You can also try reloading the patch (it was updated), but it may not solve the problem.

do i need to change anything on my netgear router. i have tried using the UpNp feature and where i set up a rule for port 119. both work fine if i have nntp scanning off. i get the same result for both, where grabit fails to searh for posts or update groups when i have nntp scanning on.

i will continue to tinker when i get some more time,

It seems that they are running an HTTP server on port 119, where avast expect NNTP. Putting this address:port (212.26.219.158:119) into Redirect tab->Ignored addresses in Internet Mail provider should solve it.

I've been having the same problem with the beta version of the new NewsPro UsenetExplorer. If I disable the nntp scanning it works Ok, but when scanning incoming nntp it lock up or locks onto the connection and will not release or will not let download of headers. It is an intermitent problem and only happens on some connections and not on all. And only has happened on one computer.
