problems

Can anyone help me out please ?
I had been using avast for months when suddenly it stoped working and I had to uninstall it.I have now download it again,installed and registered it but it won't work.
When I click on "start avast" I get 3  error messages, and when I try to activate the providers I get an error message saying "requested resident could not be found.
Your help would be much appreciated.

we need more info. What operating system are you using? What version of avast? Can you quote the error messages precisely?

Details as follows:
Windows XP
Version 4.6.585.0
When I click on "start on line protection" nothing happens
When I click on "start network shield" I get "requested resident could not be found"
When I click on "on access protection control" and then on "start" on any shield, I get "requested resident could not be found"
When I click on "start avast antivirus" I get the following messages in succession:
"storage cannot be created for the splash task"
"configuration is not loaded properly  error dgsCreateObject"
"program cannot save parameters to the storage error dbsCreateObject"
Also the avast icon on the desktop always has a red circle with a red line going through it, which I presume means that the program is inactive.
