It is installing the recovery console which in my opinion all XP systems should have.  This will allow combofix to work outside of windows

OK it finished installing the Recovery Console and then ran through.  I've re-booted but still no ComboFix.txt at C:\.  Also FF and IE still don't open.  I can see FireFox.exe in the Task Manager but am not sure what to look for for IE.  There is an explorer.exe in the Task Marager but I thought that was just the File Explorer.

What next?

Up until I had tried to start IE I could open the File Explorer and move around the drives and directories.  However after I had tried to start IE if I try and open file explorer then all I get is the Internet Properties window.  Doesn't matter whether its My Computer or a folder or even Network Places I'm trying to open.

Weird uh?

I can start it in Safe Mode.  Should I run it from there?

No error, it just doesn't start when the system is normally booted.  I'm just starting it now in Safe Mode.

Once it's Restored, what would you like me to do?

After Restore the System Rebooted normally to the login prompt.  I have logged in but now no desktop icons.  Only a cursor and the mouse works. i.e. I can move the cursor around with the mouse but nothing happens if I right click or left click.  Ctrl+Alt+Del works and I can see various processes in the Task Manager.  Lot's of disk activity initially but now no disk activity.

Gulp!

Rebooted the system using Ctrl+Alt+Del and then Shutdown.  Logged in and now get the Taskbar and Desktop Icons (Phew).  Still no FF or IE.  File Explorer works until I try to start IE.  When I try to start IE I get the Internet Properties window.  Thereafter File Exporer doesn't come up at all.

What next?

I have the MSOffice 2003 suite on the m/c.  Excel and Word work but MSAccess starts i.e. I get the 'splash screen' and then it doesn't progress further.  I haven't tried everything but TeamViewer doesn't open whilst Adobe Reader does.

Seems to be a bit hit and miss.

What would you like me to do next please?

Some more info...

I started to shut down the system from the start menu.  After it had asked me to confirm and before any of the desktop icons had disappeared, MSAcess started up!!  However I couldn't then get it to shutdown by using the 'close - X button' on the window and the shutdown process seemed to have paused.

I then repeated the shutdown request from the start menu and got a small window saying trying to end cisero... something but it then disappeared and the MSAccess window closed by itself and the system shutdown.

Does any of this help?

I'm starting to fall behind with my work without FF working.  Please can you help urgently.

Thanks

Nexar
