Kernel32.dll Error
« on: February 24, 2005, 06:32:09 PM »
I'm trying to reinstall Avast Home on a windows me computer. I deleted the folder and used the uninstall program that Avast has. Went to reinstall the program and I keep getting "Avast has caused an error in Kernel32.dll". Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks In Advance,
John

Did you (or do you) have another av on that system?
If so which one?

Did, you use windows add remove programs to uninstall avast first?

Deleting the program folder really isn't the way to do it as it will leave registry items, etc. and I'm not sure if running the avast uninstall utility (is normally only used after a failed uninstall) will have been able to clean up after a creative uninstall.

Try a reboot and try to install again and see if the kernel32.dll error wasn't just a windows glitch.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

I asked if did (or do) have another av.
eg Norton, McAfee, Panda etc.

I didn't asked if you had multiple copies of Avast.

It's hard to say anything specific without more information about the problem.
Try to activate DrWatson (standard component of Windows ME) and invoke the avast! crash. DrWatson should pop up and record some more info about the problem. The log may give us a hint about what's going on there.

Reinstalled ME over the current ME, didn't receive the Kernel32.dll error but instead was getting the visual basic timed out error instead. Installed Windows XP Pro over ME, some minor glitches that was easily worked out, and updated to the current version of avast. Then I had to shut it down, just had enough for 1 day. Will do a complete scan later on in the day and hopefully everthing worked it self out. So far no Kernel32.dll error or timed out error. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Upgrading from ME to XP is never recommended.
I suggest you do a clean installation of XP if you still have problems.
