BSOD right after coming back from Standby
« on: February 25, 2005, 08:27:22 PM »
Hello everyone. I'm new here so bare with me please.

My computer goes into the standby mode at 1:00AM by
a scheduled task for a better night sleep.

By pressing a key next morning, it wakes up. When it does,
The blue icon in the systray says something like "database is
updated. click here for detail..." for like 10 seconds. Meanwhile
I click the Receive button on the Outlook Express to see if
any incoming mail arrives. A few new mails show up on
the inbox. But...

at this moment everything freezes. I can move the mouse
cursor but that's all I can do. Click doesn't trigger anything.
Keyboard's dead too. Outlook Express is yet to redraw
the portion of the window that was briefly covered by
the popup dialog window which told me the progress of
the incoming operation for like half a second and went away.
Then it gives me the BSOD a moment later.

I tried a few things to avoid this.

Now I know it doesn't result in BSOD if I suspend the Email
Shield after getting out of the standby but before receiving
new mails. And I know I can put the Email Shield back on
after that.

Disabling a shield beats the purpose of protecting. How can
I avoid the BSOD without stopping the service?

Let the system shutdown after the task is done instead of putting it in suspend mode.

I'm sorry but how exactly does that solve the problem other than bypass it? He already knows how to bypass the problem anyway and it's less of a sledge hammer solution than yours. Or maybe you didn't read the last two paragraphs in his post. Do you post replies to simply help out at all?

xv920, right click on the avast! icon in the system tray and select "Program Settings". Click on "Update (Basic)" and set it Manual.

If that helps, you can leave it like that and manually update avast! components yourself or change the setting back to automatic in the morning.

This is not a permanent solution either. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge can give you a better one. It sounds to me like the display balloon is not compatible with suspend mode for some reason.

xv920: please send couple of your latest minidump files (\windows\minidump folder) to rypacek@asw.cz. Thanks!

) set it Manual.

So you basically mean, "don't let it update automagically,
do it by yourself".

Okay, let me try that and I'll be back with the result tomorrow.

Thanks for the response that makes sense. :-)
