David R, what do you use to find adware on your computer? I've been using AdAware for a long time, but if there's something better that's still free, I'll use it. I also use Spybot to find spyware on my computer. I usually pick a day once a week & run Avast, AdAware & Spybot to keep my system clean.

You can see my signature in my posts, I use MBAM as a secondary anti-malware scanner on on occasions run an SAS on-demand scan. I have had both for some considerable time and neither have found anything, but I don't really expect them to.

You will also see in my signature that I also use XP Pro SP3 and no issues, so it isn't an issue across all XP systems.

You didn't answer the question in my last post as to why you can't install avast again (e.g. what errors do you get) ?

Program version updates and virus updates are not happening automatically. I have tried downloading manual definitions following instructions found on the forum ("VPS") but although they download they won't install. My program version is 7.0.1451 and I cannot find how to update this manually. Please someone provide very basic instructions!

Have you tried running a repair of avast via remove programs/programs and features ? if that doesn't work I'd suggest re-installing with the latest stable version of avast 7.0.1474 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=108170.0

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved). Also, you can use build-in updater.

I've clicked and downloaded the up-to-date version of Avast FREE.

And the downloaded file is 7.0.1474.773

1473 is the latest version

Nearly, the current release latest version is 7.0.1474. The .773 at the end of the versions posted by Dennis.Gonzales I think relates to the VPS in the download, but isn't crucial on the actual build/version number 7.0.1474.
