Am back, I really never left.I still used Avast on XP and vista, but my windows 8 was another story,it turns out I had memory problems. They never found out the problem and since it was a new pc they gave me another.Got it home the next day the memory sticks fried  to a crispy lump.Back to the shop for another new PC. So far so good with avast installed and working good.By the way all 3 PC are ASUS.

Dang, same as before avast not updating. What could I possibly be doing wrong except that I have window 8 on this PC. It's set up the same as my vista but win 8 just doesn't update.I can manualy update but auto doesn't work.this is the new version 8.0.1482.

I don't see any questions, suggestions about your Update settings.
Lets do some digging, What are your avastUI > Settings > Updates > scroll down to and open Proxy Settings ?

If it isn't set to Direct connection (no proxy) set it to that.
There have been problems in the past with obtaining the information from Internet Explorer if set to Auto Detect.
