Uncheck them both in msconfig and the Internet Mail should be working after restart.

Vojtech, after being powered down overnight, all providers are working.
this is the current status/information:

Event Viewer  3/15/2005 7:07:13 Event ID 7023
Service Control Manager >properties has this message:
the avast! mail scanner service terminated with the following error: cannot create a file when that file already exists.

msconfig>statup
one ashMaiSv box unchecked
one checked with the following:
command: c:\progra~1\Alwils~1\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe
location: hklm\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurentVersion\Run

regedit:
hkey_local_machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
[ab] ashMaiSv  REG-SZ  c:\progra~1\Avast~1\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe

hkey_Current_User (etc.)
no ashMaiSv listed

I am making the assumption that after deleting ashMaiSv in regedit and rebooting, that another entry is now showing in the hkey_local_machine area. Is this correct, and should it have happened? Or should that entry not be there?
Also, should the entry in msconfig>startup be deleted?

Thank you, Annie

There should be no autostart entry for ashMaiSv, so you should delete it from registry or uncheck in msconfig. If you want to get rid of the entry in msconfig, I suppose you need to check it, which will make it appear in registry and then delete it in registry.

Vojtech, I did as you recommended...rebooting as needed.
there is still one entry in hkey_local_machine
and there are still two entries in msconfig>startup...one is checked, one is not.

I wonder if I need to completely remove all traces of avast! from this system then reinstall...something is causing these things to come back after I delete them. And I am following the directions on how to do it.

I don't know why would the registry entry reappear itself. I think that the only code in avast that creates it is in the Mail Protection Wizard (only for Autoredirect turned off), but it is not started automatically.

Vojtech, I'm surprised with this Registry key too...
Can be that, for any reason, Annie is not using the 'last' setup.exe file?
Is it possible that some application (like PrevX, TeaTimer, etc.) are 'messing' the startup items?

??? well, you can imagine my confusion as to why they keep reappearing!

Technical, these are the other programs on this machine besides Avast!...
SpyBot, AD SE Plus (Ad-Watch SE also), SpywareBlaster with SpyWare Guard, ZA free (problems resolved now with all Avast!/Alwil permissions set), and CCleaner.
I did remove A2 a few days ago.
All these progs are at the default settings as I do not know enough about "tinkering" with them--afraid that I will mess things up!

Now I am having trouble with web pages loading very slowly, but I will use the search function ;D and see if I can figure out why.

SpyBot has the 'resident' TeaTimer. Is it running?
Is Ad-Watch running?
When you installed avast, did you close at least these two programs?

Now I am having trouble with web pages loading very slowly, but I will use the search function ;D and see if I can figure out why.

Just for testing, stay on avast forum and disable WebShield. Will the speed grow up?

Hello Technical!

I checked SpyBot and the box for TeaTimer is not checked. Yes, AD_Watch is running...
And I did not close anything when I did the un/reinstall of Avast!...should I have done so?

No, the speed did not improve. It may be something with my isp or something, though.
I haven't had time to do the search for possible causes. Right now I am more interested in getting Avast! installed correctly then I'll do it.

Close all programs that you could (including the ones on the system tray) and speciall ad-watch.
Uninstall avast.
Boot.
Repeat the operation: close all programs that you could (including the ones on the system tray) and speciall ad-watch.
Install it.
Boot.
Will it work?

I have done as you suggested, Technical and Vojtech...
and I followed the procedures as instructed.

The entries are still in the registry.
msconfig>startup still shows two entries: one box is checked, one unchecked (ashMaiSv)

regedit: still an entry for ashMaiSv in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
Current Version\Run
this is *after* deleting and reboot

I have run EasyCleaner and deleted all problems...
But the entry for ashMaiSv is still in the registry. What do I need to do to get rid of it?
And after any reboot, the internet mail provider does not work. I have to power down for a minute or two, log on and then it starts working properly.

Any help would be appreciated!

I read few hours ago, this morning...
I'm empty... Something is bringing back a Registry entry that should not...
It's strange... I'm thinking  ::)
