Problem with Internet Mail Provider
« on: February 28, 2005, 03:34:16 PM »
Hi...
After updating and rebooting when I updated Asquare, I cannot get the Internet Mail provider to run.
I used the a icon to stop it then used the control panel to start it. Even though I opened Outlook Express, it says it is "waiting for a subsystem to start." I rebooted a second time in hopes it would correct it.
It is still waiting for a subsystem to start even when I open OE.

What do I need to do now?
Thank you,
Annie

Are you sure it is the Internet Mail provider who says so?
Are you not confusing it with the Outlook/Exchange provider?

No, Eddy, it's OE...I don't use Outlook.
I just checked again and it says Internet Mail provider, waiting for a sub system to start.

Annie

anyone? do I need to run the mail protection wizard? I've been reading the help files and wonder if I need to do this.
thanks!

ok, I'll go offline for awhile and see if it corrects itself like it did before...

All right, I am really confused now.
After being off line for a few hours, everything is working fine again. I didn't even have to manually start the Internet Mail provider...
This is what happened before as posted in the General or Off-Topic forum. (Bob posted it first and I added what happened to me)

Can someone please tell me why this is happening?? Or do I need to do a repair of Avast! ?
This is not making sense to me and I cannot find anything in the help files or in the forums--with the exception of it being a glitch. It ain't funny when it keeps happening!

Mail Protection Wizzard? Hmm i thought you had XP on that system..
If so, try to remove the Internet Mail Provider, reboot and reinstall it. Let's see if that helps.

Edit: If it stops working again that is. For now leave it as it is.

XP is on this system so I must have mis-read something so I will go back to the help section.
In the meantime, I'll leave it alone since it's working.

Please let me make sure I am understanding you, though. If it happens again, I should terminate it from the control panel, reboot, then re-install it (again from the control panel)--is this correct, Eddy?
Thank you,
Annie

Yes it is. This will work like a 'repair' but just for the Internet Mail provider.

Annie, 'terminate' is not the exact word.
Using Control panel you will 'uninstall' (and, after reboot, re-install it).
You can test first 'disable' it. Left click the 'a' blue icon and choose the provider (Internet Mail) and stop it...
Look, you will be unprotected doing this and maybe you're not allowed to get your mail (I'm not sure).

Ok...
what I've done before is stop the provider after clicking on the a icon, then from On-Access Protection Control I start it again. Usually it goes from "no task is currently using this provider" to "waiting for a subsystem to start" then "the provider is currently running." Sometimes "the provider is currently running" shows even if Outlook Express is not opened yet.
I did not reboot between doing these things. Could that be the reason that I am continuing to have this happen?

I used the word terminate because that is what is on list of running providers...
What about when it asks about persisting the change?

Annie,
The message "The provider is waiting on the subsystem to start" will be shown there until you open MS Outlook.
The plugin will be enabled automatically after that.

You said that sometimes "the provider is currently running" shows even if Outlook Express is not opened yet...
Well, it should be 'all' the time as it's a provider and not a pluggin.
If I remeber correctly I've already answered this questions when done by your beloved mother.

Thank you, Technical...
I checked the thread you posted and it seems this has been happening far longer than I realized.
As far as I know, Momma always used Outlook Express and not Outlook--after she had it reformatted, the repair man put it on her system but she didn't like it and had it removed.
So this is happening with OE...I'll wait and see if it happens again, and repair it if it does.

Thanks!
Annie

Eddy, I had to do this "repair" after I updated Asquared, but the internet mail provider is not working. I opened OE, but it still says "waiting for a sub system to start."
I followed your initial instructions, including a reboot.
Do you have any other advice or do I need to do a complete repair of Avast! ? All other providers are working (I do have instant messaging stopped as I do not use it)

Thank you,
Annie

You can try this:

- remove Avast using the uninstall util from the website
- reboot
- setup the mail as instructed by your provider
- test the mail
- install Avast again
- reboot
- test the mail (and check if it is scanned)
