Still not working...

What do you mean?
Can't you send/receive emails? Did you test both Outlook and Outlook Express?

It's now working :)
Seems there was a problem with my ZA free--had to go back in and permit some Avast items.
I would have thought that anything Avast would have been gone from ZA free after re-installing, but some items were still there.
All I have to do now is get the clean text message inserted in messages...it shows in the headers but not in the message itself.

I think you're not using MS Outlook (full).
Don't forget that you will not see the inserted note in the 'Sent Items' folder of your mail program,
because avast adds the note after the mail leaves the mail program.

 :-[
Thank you, Technical!
I just plain overlooked how to do it! It was a mess for me to uninstall then re-install and getting ZA free to allow access for the missing Avast items.
No excuses, though...I was just tired of reading and gave up :-\

This should be fixed with version 4.6.612.

Technical, thank you...
I did read it but hesitated about doing it. I think I am a bit reluctant after doing the reinstallation :-\
Kind of feel like doing one thing at a time, especially since it is working now!

No, Technical, this is really messed up now!
I followed the instructions on the web site...
After reinstalling Avast!, I did maintenance/clean up after updating the security programs Momma has on this computer.
The internet mail provider is not working at all. I have emailed support for help. Not even a repair worked...
a test email to myself shows in the headers that the message was not tested and there is no clean message in the body...obviously OE was open, but the internet mail provider is "waiting for a subsystem to start."
It doesn't matter what I do (stop then start the provider) it is not working

This is crazy to me...but there must be something on this system that is causing this. I just have to find out what it is, delete anything extra that may be causing a conflict

Was Avast! working properly after the re-installation?

What exactly was the maintenance you did?. What apps/programs did you run/use?

Walker, thank you...

Yes, it was working properly after the re-installation

I updated A2, SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and ran ccleaner
Spywareblaster is also on this system although that did not have an update.
Emptied the cache by using disk clean up, but did not run anything in the tools section.

Thanks,
Annie

Start regedit.exe and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
If you find a key named "ashMaiSv" here, delete it. Do the same for
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Then restart computer.
(This hint is valid only for Windows NT/2000/XP !)

Vojtech, thank you for your reply.
After being off line overnight, it is now working properly. All providers are running, although I did stop the instant messaging and Outlook as I don't use them.

Before I follow your recommendation, I wanted to make sure I should still do this since it is now working...
This has been the pattern, though, even when my mother was alive. It would work all right, then suddenly stop. Sometimes it would stop working for no apparent reason, other times it would be after updating those programs or doing maintenance.

Do you still recommend that I do regedit.exe?

Thank you very much,
Annie

Yes, please do it, otherwise it may not work again after restart.

 ???
I followed the exact instructions...
On #1:
clicked on the plus sign on run and this is what showed under optional componets:
IMAIL   MAPI   MSFS
I took no action since ashMaiSv was not listed.

#2
the only display in the right column was:
[ab] (default)                 REG-SZ  Value Not Set
[ab]   NvMediaCenter           REG-SZ  RUNDLL32.exe         c:\windows\system32\N

Internet mail provider will not start. I can send and receive emails but they are not being scanned.
I tried stopping the provider then going to the on-access panel and starting it.
Still saying, "waiting for a subsystem to start"

Should I try yet another re-installation??

Annie

Also look to your startup folder (Start button->Programs->Startup), if it does not contain ashMaiSv.exe.
