I had to back down to version 7 because a VPN software I'm using didn't work with version 8.

With Version 8 I also got into trouble with accessing one of my mail accounts, on a local server.

When I reverted to 7 I got a bunch of mails!  :P

In addition to this I didn't like to get Chrome force-installed.

So for the time being I stick to version 7.

I don't like it one bit.  First of all, the interface is horrible.  And today "WebRep" crashed and won't reload.  Just before that, it actually allowed a trojan after I right clicked and scanned THAT FILE.  Today, it also won't update.  I finally had to disable it because it is hogging a bunch of bandwidth and NOT updating.  I see Avast 8 coming to a recycle bin near me soon.

If you have come to get help, then I suggest you create your own new topic, so it doesn't get buried in this massive topic and we will try and help.

In that topic if you can expand on the information you have given, webrep crash, what browser, etc. File name and location and how you know it is a trojan. Update problems, what errors are you getting, plus what is your firewall.

Ahhh... it totally trashed my L2TP/IPsec VPN connection to work.
Error 720 constantly - I have spent the last four hours trying to resolve.
First time Avast! has ever let me down!

However - I love the new interface! If only it had a "Fix VPN button"

Cheers!

I don't think I want help.  I have used avast! for years, but now it is simply NO GOOD.  I had it paused for everything while trying out a different antivirus suite.  And all of a sudden I had a massive download coming that I didn't want or expect.  I checked netstat and it was avast!  Downloading and downloading with updates paused.  I definitely do NOT want a bandwidth hog churning without my permission.  And then it popped up with another reminder about updating my browser, and I don't want ANY third party software attempting to run my updates.  I had to shut that function OFF in avast!  yet still it persists.  VERY annoying.  And the popups in the corner getting bigger each time and more frequent?  It's SO annoying.  I don't need all that nonsense.  Especially if they can't even get the antivirus part right!  My new software suite detected TWENTY instances of trojans yesterday that avast! never even saw.  Some of those were in archived and backup files, which means avast! has been letting them in for YEARS.  No.  This is DEFINITELY not the software I want.  Buhbye avast!

You can turn off automatic updates.

And then it popped up with another reminder about updating my browser, and I don't want ANY third party software attempting to run my updates.  I had to shut that function OFF in avast!  yet still it persists.
In the installer, you can choose if you want to have the Software Updater in avast.

My new software suite detected TWENTY instances of trojans yesterday that avast! never even saw.  Some of those were in archived and backup files, which means avast! has been letting them in for YEARS.
Backup files are likely to be false positives. Exactly what was detected?

We'd love to help,

I'm happy with Avast 8 but the installer feature that updates out of date software doesn't work if you're not using an administrator account. I use a standard user account as my main account most of the time after a suggestion by Sophos Security, but normally I just enter my administrator password when installing software. Avast 8 doesn't ask for my administrator password but doesn't install the updates it asks about. They're all up to date now that I've logged on as an administrator but you should be able to just enter your administrator password from a standard user account.

I loved the avast 7 UI, so it is hard to use any of the selections in the poll, it wouldn't be 'About the same as V7' or above and the selections below that are too negative.

The free UI really does need more contrast, but would I go back to avast 7 over aesthetics no, but avast 8 free hurts my eyes.

That's how I feel as well!

I think it is Crap, didn't anyone test this thing out, or was the corporate pressure too much. I guess I had 7 worked out. I have all the settings to ask, and it never asks. To get pictures to my tablet from my PC, Turn off Avast for 10 minutes. To get updates for my newsreader, turn off Avast for 10 minutes. Are seeing a pattern here?????

It is way to difficult to manage, tell the new programmer he has a lot to learn about user interfaces. I am sick and tired of trying and experimenting with settings to find out, well, that didn't work. I am a pretty smart guy, but I have nightmares thinking what if my mom had this program! HF

Fix it, or I will move on.

The pattern is that rather than simply saying it is rubbish and as for the turn this and that off for 10 minutes, etc. I have no idea whether you are talking about avast 7 or 8.

Your comment "Fix it, or I will move on" doesn't help anyone fix anything as there really is insufficient information to even determine what they need to fix.

If you are serious about wanting a fix, then I suggest that you start your own new topic and give some more detailed information on the problems that you are experiencing (error messages, and associate email/newsreader program, operating settings, etc.) and we will try to help.

Still unhappy with it.
As soon as i find an other antivirus that doesn't bloat yet (bloat has very little to do with non functional software, but everything with installing sotware and functions one didn't ask for). i'll test it.
If it works, all systems i installed avast on, will be freed of avast and get the other product.
I didn't ask for internet security, i want an anti virus.
I didn't ask for software updater and wasn't asked whether install or not, because you simply don't get questions like these when updating.
Last time i mentioned it, someone told me it could be switched off.
This is not true.
You have to switch it off every time you reboot, there is no way of switching it off permanently in the program.
In another thread someone told about this option in a future update, but it didn't show up yet.
So now to get rid of this nonsense, you need to go to add/remove programs, select avast and deinstall this part.
That's ridiculous.
Deciding this function is needed for all users is also a plain insult to your users.
