Oh, I found that. Three different places, about gave up.
Who would have thought it was under security?
I went first to "settings"...nope.
Well, maybe "account"....nope.
I did kill it, and I had to. Still trying to figure out why a port change in outgoing e-mail causes Avast to block sending e-mails.
Since scanning of your email is part of Security, it's the logical place along with all of the other security modules.
To get help with you email problem, start your own topic and someone will help you. :)

Did that. None of the high profilers seemed to understand, but one of the lesser count persons did.
Probably won't make any difference anyway after today's updates.

I might like it if it didn't freeze my IE8 all the time - even on this forum. Never had that problem with AIS 6.

Maybe you should consider updating IE. The current version is 10.

Maybe there is a legit reason why he can't XP perhaps, but since they haven't got a signature we either have to guess. Or look back at their post history to see zenzor has posted in a number of XP related topics. But has previously reported having "XP SP3, IE8, AIS 6.0.1367" in January this year.

Like a lot of programs avast changes too. I have to agree with the many that dislike the whole Win8 or "cellphone" styling or look. Why so many programs or interfaces have to be so sheepish and follow this trend is too bad. While it might be easier for the masses used to using their cellphone for everything I still prefer an actual computer.

My only real beef with the new avast that I REALLY dislike is this software updater crap.  Why things like this get added in is really annoying (at best). And every time you go into the settings to STOP it, well, it seems to start itself right back up again. Either on reboot or any updates.

So PLEASE either get rid of the software updater or allow the user to keep it turned off! I do not need the help of avast to update my other programs or to even pay attention to such things.  This is the sort of thing Norton and other programs started doing years ago that turned them into junk (wanting to do all these other things instead of just the one that was wanted).  Seriously, this is just too much and not wanted.

Simple enough instructions to follow if some of the new features aren't to your liking. There are many people who happen to like being made aware of the fact that their program isn't up-to-date.

Internet Explorer 8 will also freeze with Avast7, and probably also without Avast. This is just another clumsy attempt from M$, to make you skip their only well written operating system.
Do like most other people in this world have already done: Skip Internet Explorer and install Firefox or Chrome. Bingo... Your problem is gone.  8)

Yes, still on XP on this machine, but I am going to upgrade to Win 7 - 64 and IE10 soon. Maybe that will work.

IE8 was very stable with AIS 6, very rare it froze. With AIS 8 it happens regularly.

I like IE and have some plugins I use all the time that will only work with IE, so I can't replace it.

Not too thrilled with it. I'm putting v7 back.  V8 slows down everything far too much, I'm finding I'm disabling more and more of it to get system response back, so its self-defeating.

And the GUI is ugly Windows 8 style  >:(   Microsoft decided to jump off a cliff with their Win8 GUI and all software authors decided to follow? Windows 8 will never touch a machine I own!  8)

Personally I would do a clean reinstall of avast8 (not 7) and see if that resolved the issues:
- clean reinstall, see instructions here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=121057.msg926620#msg926620.

As for the windows 8 interface, I'm possibly one of the most opposed to the Metro interface. But lets be realistic here it is one page, the home page, every other one is normal style interface. Open the interface if you have to and click the Security tab at the top, this contains most of the information readily required by the user and even when closed (provided you haven't shut down the system) when you open it again it will be at the Security tab.

Thanks for the reply David, but I've already clean-installed v7 again.  I do have one question though: It says there is a higher version of v7 now. If I let Avast do the update will it bring me back to v8 on its own? I've disabled auto-updates to prevent v8 from returning and I don't want to do another uninstall cycle.

BTW the system is back to its old responsive self now, so I don't know if it was just v8 being installed on top of v7, or if it was v8 itself, but I don't feel like finding out right now.  :P

What version do you have the last 4 digits after 7.0. and what higher version is it offering (last 4 digits after 7.0. again) ?

It is more likely the installation over the top as I and many others haven't had these issues on avast 8 hence the suggestion to do a clean install of avast 8.
