The "connect to server" is possibly firewall blocking.
What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Turn off firewall and no difference. Os XP sp3.  Software updater has no problems and I am able to manually update from http://www.avast.com/download-update.  Deleted firewall rule which was full access and when I did a manual update the firewall pop up asked for permission for Avast which I gave permanent permission and same result. The error also states " cannot connect to download325.avast.com. BTW streaming updates has a connection.

XP firewall has no outbound protection, so shouldn't have any effect on avast.

How long have you had avast installed ?
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

BTW the firewall is Ashampoo.

It's a new install, Avast has never updated automatically. Previous Anti-Virus was Avira for years and it was removed thru the Windows add or remove program in the control panel. Before I installed Avast I installed AVG for 1 day but it was not working right and was uninstalled the same way.

It is possibly worth running their specific uninstall utilities:
- Uninstall possible remnants of previously installed AVs see, http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/, this has a collection of manufactures removal tools, so that should remove any remnants, registry, etc. So you should find one there for avira and avg.

Note: So as not to get lost in this massive unrelated topic, it would be best to continue this in your own new topic.

I ran both AVG and Avira with no change. Cannot Connect To Server Error.

Hi!

If somebody isn't able to install 'avast8' for there are too much problems and went back to version 7; will he/she get VPS-Updates for the future?

The VPS updates are the same for both so they should be around for some considerable time, but no one can say for the future.

I HATE windoze 8. I have it on my new laptop, just about have it to where it works...Start8, no Metro, no charms, no hot spots, start button, run button, normal desktop.
I feel about the same way with the new Avast 8.
Do folks really think we need all that stuff?
I tried last night to go through it and find things. Just finding mail protection to turn it off was NOT intuitive.
I got it, but geez, guys.

I killed off all the alert pop ups, sounds, cloud, all of it.
I guess you can streamline it a bit.
I trust cloud as far as I can throw it. MS makes a big deal out of it, guess where the hackers will spend their time now?
Anybody who puts data in the Cloud had better think about that twice until it's really proven safe.
Streaming updates?
No way.
Set it to let me know when updates are available.
I find Avast downloading once without permission, it's going the way of Norton and MacAfee....in the round file

@ ScaleCraft
Be thankful that avast is one of the most configurable AVs and allows you to set it up the way you want it.

Oh, I found that. Three different places, about gave up.
Who would have thought it was under security?
I went first to "settings"...nope.
Well, maybe "account"....nope.
I did kill it, and I had to. Still trying to figure out why a port change in outgoing e-mail causes Avast to block sending e-mails.
