Try this:

 1) Select START -> RUN...
 2) In the row write this command:
    a) If you have Windows NT or 2000:
    C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
    b) If you have Windows 95, 98 or Millenium:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
    c) If you have Windows XP:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
 3) Press OK (or Enter).
 4) Message saying that the file was successfully registered should
    appear.

 Now should all work properly.

I just reinstalled Avast on my win. 98 laptop to see if I could clear up this error.  I keep getting the usiGetSkin error message.  I tried entering that string that someone suggested but then I keep getting the message --Cannot find the file----or one of its components---Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

How would I do that???

Why don't you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Thanks for the advice.  However I did all that you mentioned and I am still getting that error.  Guess I will have to get a different virus program for that computer.

dtb,

I don't think you need a new virus program.
I think you need a bit more patience.

Avast will work with the OS Win98......I have it on mine.

If you can settle down to tell us exactly what is happening and what error messages you are receiving, then we can help you get Avast working.

Otherwise, good luck in finding a freeware antivirus as good as Avast Home!

Well I have tried all the things mentioned above...
1.  Entering the string in the run command area.
2.  Doing the Repair
3.  Uninstalling/boot, reinstalling/boot
Actually I did these things several times--all evening.  And I know that Avast works on 98--I have used it on other 98 computers but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working on this one.  Any other suggestions?

Do you have the latest MDAC drivers and JET drivers installed?

Can't promise it will solve the problem, but it sure helped people with related problems.

W98 can be and most definently is a bit flaky, is there any specific programs you need to use on this laptop that prohibits you from using a better OS?

However, you have free telephone support (i have heard, not used it myself) so just call and don't hang up until the problem is solved.

Well I just downloaded and installed MDAC and cannot seem to find the jet drivers suggested.   I have rebooted and it is still doing the same thing.  Do you think downloading direct x would help?  If so which ones...I am running first edition W98

I am not using this laptop for much but to help folks that connect with me about problems they are having with their 98's.  I have recommended Avast to them and I had hoped to be able to have it on here to use as a guide for questions they might have.

Thanks to everyone who is giving me suggestions.

Ah, so there is no dependency search included with the installer, that leaves it where the *nix world was 7 years ago, surely you remember that.

You have been involved in computer security for 20+ years you said in another thread, i am just curious, where have you been involved and in what have you been involved?

I'll chase you around in every thread until you tell me, having been in the business in for more than a decade i know yo by neame if you have, and if not, then just say so.

Hi Germanium202,

you have told us that you do not understand avast!, you do not use Windows, etc. so please STOP flooding this forum with nonsense contributions. This forum is not Chat forum, it is the support forum for particular program (avast!) which you have never used.

If you have nothing to say to the particular Subject, please stay silent - just don't say anything. If you want to say something just to one user, use Personal Messaging.

PS: I am starting to be really tired with all stuff you just throw at us during last 2 days: your many times mentioned 10-20 years of experience, your expression about all women loving you et cetera. Please don't be off topic any more!!

Dtb, sorry if I did not help at the first time, but, after all posts here, can you see if your problem could be corrected by setting the storage method in the Avast ini file?

Find the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini
Open it and scroll down until you see the ODBC line usually under the heading [Common].  Change the Database=ODBC to read Database=XML

Can you post the results?
