can you try a clean install please:

Run the uninstaller for any AV's you used prior to avast from here to remove remanents: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117113.0
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot

Same problem for me! On my Netbook "Acer Aspire 753" with Vista Ultimate 64Bit installed, the PC freezes at the Progress Bar if Avast is installed ... On my PC (AMD Phenom II, AMD Radeon HD5870, 8GB Ram) i have installed Windows 8 an 2 copys from Vista and there are no such problems.

So maybe it has something to do with Intel Drivers? Because my PC is 100% AMD Hardware and my Netbook 100% Intel.

Even the "fix" does not help ... So i have to uninstall Avast and install MSE again on my Netbook.

Sorry for my bad english!

Greetings

..definetely NOT fixed!

I always install via safemode-boot and the uninstall tool at first.

Wonder, which information could be helpful for AVAST to fix this bug......

I have the same issue here. After installing Avast 8.0, the cmputer freezes at the progress bar. I tried the fix, but no luck.

OS is Win Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 fully updated.

I went back to Avast 7.0. I have never installed any virussoftware on this computer other than Avast.

I haven't got any minidump files to send you.

I also have a laptop with a fully updated Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64, and there Avast 8.0 is working fine.

I will try the fix listed in this thread, has anyone else had success?

Could you share this info with your customer lack o' service?

This was my experience last evening

I have the paid version and when I called the support line to report my boot fail, they remote accessed my computer (with my permission) and proceeded to point out typical system housekeeping stuff they claimed suddenly conflicted with the upgrade. HOWEVER, for $169. they can get my system running fine again.

WTF?

So I paid for software to cause my computer to trip, to cause me to call them for support so I can pay them another $169 for basic housekeeping crap? I think not.

Another good product, ruined by greed.

UPDATE fix failed. All antivirus removed from pc with correct programs. Tried loading avast free and it still tells me I have antivirus on the pc and still freezes on boot.

I have generated the support report, but no idea where to send it.

I just want my money back at this point and a different provider

Empty!

As I wrote - no change at all - still the same "nonbooting"bug....

I am using window 7, just update my avast program...and I didn't expect it to freeze at progress bar after reboot too.
I wonder the virus definition is up-to-date or not..it show as "initializing, please wait..."
Should I uninstall it? Any solution found?

Hi I'd like to say that since the update within Avast Free version to Avast 8 its been nothing but problems.
When it did the update to the new version and it ask you to restart your PC it froze on the progress bar while rebooting.
I had to finally go into safe mode and disable Avast.
It also installed Chrome on my computer without my permission .Never got a chance to know it was even going to be installed because
of all the reboot problem.
Then there was another program update today ,same exact thing happened ,this time I just clicked on "last known good configuration"
It seems to be when ever you do a program update to this new avast and have to restart this is where the problem begins.
Its very troublesome ,I have Vista 64 bit .
I have never had problems with avast before ,but I won't do another program update only to have it freeze my computer on restart.
I'm going to keep avast on until I can either find a solution or find another antivirus, its a shame have used avast for many years.
I don't like anything about the new version as well, but I could live with it if it wouldn't cause the boot problems.
