Normally I don’t install beta versions on my PCs but in this case, I use my "test drive" with Windows Vista 64-bit where no harm can be done.

Avast team has NOT asked me to install their beta version or make other modifications but when the next beta version is available I will test it and hope it solves the problem.

I don’t understand that there is still no official solution for this problem with 64-bit but I will use the fix in the registry until a solution is available.

I've been looking for other free antivirus software, but have not found a replacement for avast. I still prefer avast and I hope avast 8 will be just as good and stable as the good old version 7.

I have, on my test drive, tried to install the new avast! Free beta version 8.0.1485.213 which was released yesterday.
I am pleased to discover that my Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit starts normally without freezing on startup.  :) :)
I will now wait for the final available update and hope it is still ok.
Dear friends! There is still hope for Vista 64-bit users.

Did you follow normal proceedure?

Clear current installs in safe mode (with aswclear.exe) then full install?

Yes, - I uninstalled beta 1 version 8.0.1484 using the tool aswclear.exe and did a clean install of beta 2 version 8.0.1485.
With the new beta 2 my laptop starts normally without freezing on startup.

I have asked avast! support when an official update is expected to be available.
The answer was that it will be available at the end of this month.

I also asked about the modification in the registry was a valid way to solve the problem
until an update will be available and will the fix affect the safety of avast! antivirus software?
No answer to that.

On my normal laptop hard drive, I have uninstalled version 8.0.1483 (with modification in the registry)
and reinstalled version 7.0.1474. I will use version 7 until the new update is ready for download.

NB:
Remember if you use version 7 then do not update to version 7.0.1483. You will end up with version 8.0.1483 and a PC that freezes again at startup.

The new beta 3 build 8.0.1486 which was released yesterday
still works with my Windows Vista 64-bit without freezing on startup.  :)
(I use the free version)

I updated using the internal update function from the free version 7.0.1474 to version 8.0.1488.
My Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit still works without freezing on startup.  :) :)

I have windows 7 64bit home premium, and swithed from MSE to avast free 8.0.1488. I've had no problems so far and avast seems to be working like it should  ;)

The last time I tried updating to the newer version my computer froze at the progress bar when rebooted. That was several weeks ago and I gave up and stuck with version 7.

Please confirm if the bug was fixed so I can finally switch to the newer version without any problems.

Also, would it be better if I just updated it or should uninstall the version I have and then do a clean installation of the newest one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Preferably I would say do a clean install using the avast removal tool if you have had earlier issues, bugs can be related to certain systems and varying programs installed so the only way to no for sure is for you to try it.
