returned to Avast Free
« on: March 02, 2013, 03:44:30 PM »
HI all,
I've returned to Avast Free after two years of using MSE.  Installed the new version
into my XP box yesterday.  I have to say, it's working well, impact on performance
appears very low; on the contrary, MSE in XP has some issues and strange delays.

When I installed this new version 8, I did a custom install.  I selected all the shields
(as per default), but for now, deselected all those items in the next row.
(safezone, "browser protection", etc, etc) - I'll consider them when I find out more.
I'm not even sure if they're available in the Free version?

After the first boot, the desktop appeared, but the task bar at the bottom remained empty.
NO start button, quicklinks, or systray on the right.  I was able open Task Manager
(ctrl, shift, esc) but couldn't do anything.  System hung after a minute or so.

I eventually got to safemode, turned off Windows Defender, (which I'd forgotten about),
rebooted back to normal mode, and everything has been fine since.

Congratulations on this release.
