usb issues

I'm using Avast 8.0.1489 on my stack PC. Having just moved home, I've had to switch from ethernet to usb 2.0 broadband connection via a D-Link wireless adapter to access my secure home broadband network. Ever since, despite getting 8MB+ wireless broadband speed, it's been taking avast 25 mins+ to update and even when it's finished AvastSvc.exe suddenly spikes up to 40% of my cpu time at random intervals during normal operation. On reflection, Avast has also always severely slowed down USB back-ups onto my remote hard drive, but that's never been as issue as I just switch off broadband and Avast's shields to get round it. That's not an option here though - how can I tell avast to stop getting its knickers in a twist with usb devices - or vice versa - while remaining secure and protected online?
