another Thunderbird problem
« on: March 10, 2013, 07:36:17 PM »
I receive mail from both my gmail and att accounts, but can't send mail.  At first I thought it might be due to a Thunderbird update, but now wonder if I have messed up my email settings since the Avast update.

Avast 8.0.1482
Thunderbird 17.03
Windows 7

Outgoing server settings:  Normal password     /    SSL/TLS

Should this work (nothing else changed)?

Why can't you send mail? Do you get an error?

Please verify that your Mail & Newsgroups account settings are correct and try again.  - pop-up after spinning its wheels  for quite awhile.

You may want to look at the  account settings (SMTP section) of TB which the default/suggested port for SSL (on the right hand) is and which the current port number (on the left hand) is. Just in case they don't match, you should try using the default/suggested one instead.

EDIT: instructions revised / grammar check - yeah, sorry for my poor English...

Did you previously have avast 7 installed and do an update to avast 8 ?

If so:
Avast8 can now (by all accounts, excuse unintended pun) handle the SSL emails without having to modify your email settings in your email program.

Since you previously had avast 7 you will have needed to change your email program, account settings to allow avast to scan SSL email, these changes need to be reversed, e.g set back to the SSL ports and Authentication.

Delete the entries for your email accounts in the avast Mail Shield > Settings > SSL Scanning.

Solved the problem - which was Thunderbird, not Avast.  Sorry to have bothered you guys.  However I did learn how to get to the Shield settings in Avast 8 from this forum.  Apologies and thanks.

No problem, the main thing is you have resolved it and learned something into the bargain.
