Just wanted to let you know about some less than favorable comments ....................

http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2013/04/17/avast-8-free-av-a-step-in-the-wrong-direction/?daves-avast=

I'm still using XP so I'm not affected but this doesn't look good.
I've painfully read it and posted a reply:

I have 4 computers all running WinXP SP3. and was running Avast 7 free on all of them. I accepted the offer to install Avast 8 free and immediately regretted it. It lead to me having to format the HDD and reinstall windows
on that machine. I'm still running Avast 7 free on 3 computers and am ignoring all update messages.

I logged on here hoping that I was going to read some good news, that all problems have been solved with Avast 8 but it seems not.

I don't understand how a company can allow their product to go from being the best to being the worst in such a short space of time. It's a real pity.

After a system restore (Win Home Premium 7-64), Avast Internet security suddenly insists on entering my license file or my registration code.

I repeatedly uploaded the license file but Avast repeatedly returns the message:  "CANNOT FIND LICENSE FILE" !!

I tried to enter a "Ticket" through the online support form, but an error message is repeatedly shown stating: "support.avast.com  HTTP/1.050x Server Error".

Therefore I contacted support several times direclty by email, but they do not answer nor even acknowledge receipt of my complaint.

Please help: I have no protection ! of course I could uninstall the paid for Avast version that I have and which expires on April 24 2014 and install the free version instead, but I still hope to receive support from AVAST.

Hi before using system restore you need to disable the Avast self protection

Lets reinstall Avast

Download Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

  • Run aswClear
  • It will offer to reboot to safe mode .. Accept that

  • Once it has rebooted to safe mode
  • In the Select Product to Uninstall dropdown choose the version of Avast that is on your system.
  • Press Uninstall
  • Once complete reboot your system to Normal Mode
  • Reinstall Avast
----------

Hi
Thanks for the update to 8.0.1483

I am running an old desktop with windows XP service pack 3 and have zone alarm installed. Hence I had a lot of problems when trying to update to the earlier version of avast 8. The update seriously crashed my system and I had to use system restore in safe mode to get the old v7 back.

OK so I now have 8.0.1483 installed BUT.... It won't run a quick or full system scan. It starts the scan but cuts off after a short while and either tells me the scan is complete or freezes. Seems the amount of data scanned freezes though the number of files carries on updating until it too freezes.
Other than this the software is running OK.
HELP!! Is this still a zone alarm problem??

thanks
macceye

Hmm RAM is good, I assume you have at least 15% spare disc space.  Have you tried it with ZA uninstalled ?

Not sure it may be a conflict with ZA.  So if you could uninstall that and then try a scan

Why avast UI doesn't have transparent borders like setup windows has? Why is matte?

I installed the free avast thereupon I introduced the code of the license to have validity for one year, but the problem is that when I go to connect to the internet so that the definitions are updated, however the next day I a blue box at the top of the clock, forcing me to install the update avast pro version.

Why does this happen?,
I appreciate your thoughtful answers

My desktop machine is a Compaq Evo D310 Desktop Windows Xp Professional Sp3

Hmm honestly this isn't normal. Either is a bug, either is a issue from the last version of a avast that you have it installed before. You should use the avast uninstall utility   http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility , and reinstall the avast. And see if you can reproduce the issue/bug.

I am also unable to run the latest version of Avast (free) on a Vista Business laptop, with the Avast versions were downloading May 15 & May 16, 2013. After booting up, Task Manager reports the Avast process using 85%-95% of the CPU. I have tried re-installing a couple of times, but I eventually had to boot into safe mode to uninstall it.

My XP PC and Windows 8 laptop are doing OK with the latest upgrades.
