Well you shouldn't be using avast free on a Business laptop to start with (Home and non-commercial use only), it should be avast Pro.
Thought that shouldn't stop it from being installed/updated.
A clean install would probably resolve it, but not the fact you should be using avast free for business use.

I understand. However, this is a hand-me-down laptop used only at home to surf the web. My XP and Win 8 computers are also for home use only.
