I just downloaded AVAST version 4.1. Is the only time it will scan is at boot up?
Also, what is BART?

Ehm, well, of course it's not the only time. You also have the on-access module that protects you constantly on the backgroun (while you're working), and also the on-demand scanner that you can activate any time you want.
